This expression announces to the world every year the arrival of a new red wine from the Beaujolais region of France. Why is it so important, and why is everyone eagerly awaiting it?
It is released every year on the third Thursday of November, marking the end of the harvest while being the first wine of each year. It initially started as a local phenomenon in the cafes of Beaujolais and Lyon. The phenomenon quickly spread to Paris and from there to the whole world.
But first, let's see what Beaujolais Nouveau is. It is a red wine from Burgundy, (Beaujolais Villages region) from the Gamay variety and is made with a "special" winemaking technique called carbonic maceration.
The grapes are placed unbroken in the tank, where carbon dioxide has been introduced, and fermentation begins inside the berry itself, which then swells and releases the aromas and colors of the skin into the wine.
The aromas are intensely fruity, the color is red and the body is light with minimal tannins and a characteristic freshness.
Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine without a barrel that cannot be aged.
A fresh wine that has managed to both match all the taste cultures of the world and to occupy wine lovers everywhere on the third Thursday of November.
