THE GREAT GREEK WINES (GGW) EVENT TOOK PLACE ONCE AGAIN THIS YEAR, AND WE’VE GOT THE LIST OF STANDOUT WINES FOR YOU. THE RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED DURING A CEREMONY AT THE HOTEL GRANDE BRETAGNE, HOSTED BY MYRON STRATIS.
This year, however, things are a bit different. The event is no longer called “50 Great Greek Wines,” as you might remember, but simply Great Greek Wines (GGW). This rebranding marks a fresh start, aiming to spotlight even more exceptional entries. The list of award-winning wines—known as The List—will now be based solely on quality and the number of entries. This means more wines and producers will have the chance to shine. But there’s one key rule: only the top 10% of entries will be awarded, ensuring that the bar for quality remains high.
GGW is the brainchild of Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis and is built around a modern representation of Greek wine, seen through the eyes of top wine tasters, international opinion leaders, and fellow Masters of Wine. The goal of GGW is to highlight the quality, identity, and potential of Greek wines in a way that is fresh, relevant, and globally accessible.
So, what sets GGW apart?
GGW isn’t just another wine competition. It’s a modern platform for promotion and communication that brings Greek wine producers closer to a global audience. Through the GGW Awards, unique categories like the Hall of Fame and Great Value Wines, and dynamic events and masterclasses across Europe, GGW is building a new, more vibrant image for Greek wine—one that blends quality, character, and outward-looking energy.
This year’s star-studded judging panel included:
- Mark Andrew MW, co-owner of Noble Rot, Shrine to the Vine, and Keeling–Andrew
- Lenka Sedlackova MW, Head of Brand Management and Buyer for Central and Eastern Europe at Bancroft Wines
- Wojciech Bońkowski MW, wine writer and Poland’s first Master of Wine
- Christophe Heynen MW, “Belgian Wine Personality of the Year” (2020) and serial entrepreneur in the wine industry
- Stefan Neumann MS, wine consultant
- Peter Richards MW, writer and broadcaster
- Paz Levinson, Wine Director at Groupe Pic and MW student

Next to each wine, you’ll notice the bottle weight listed. This initiative aims to raise awareness among both consumers and winemakers about the environmental impact of heavy bottles. It’s worth noting that world-renowned wine critic Jancis Robinson MW follows the same practice, often criticizing overly heavy bottles with her signature British wit. Taking a step toward more sustainable practices is not just important—it’s essential. After all, what truly matters is what’s inside the bottle, not the bottle itself. 😉
